Who is this case for?

Advance parole applicants

Eligible people seeking permission to return and request parole after temporary travel, including certain pending adjustment applicants.

Permanent residents planning extended travel

Lawful permanent or conditional permanent residents who may need a reentry permit for an extended absence.

Refugees and asylees

People eligible for a refugee travel document, including certain permanent residents who obtained residence through refugee or asylee status.

This page covers these common travel-document requests. I-131 also serves other purposes, such as certain parole requests and TPS travel authorization, which have different requirements.

    Supporting evidence

Gather identity and immigration records, applicable receipt or approval notices, prior travel documents, required photos, and evidence supporting your request. The checklist varies by document type.

    Review document-specific evidence

Check the current filing fee, any additional applicable fee, filing address, and eligibility for any exemption or fee waiver. Each family member generally needs a separate application. A lost travel document abroad may require a different process, such as I-131A carrier documentation, rather than a new ordinary I-131 filing.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Basic Eligibility Requirements

The filing location, timing, and travel rules differ for each document.

Get Started
  • Advance parole

Establish an eligible basis and obtain the required authorization before departure. Leaving while adjustment is pending without advance parole generally abandons the application unless a specific exception applies. A filing receipt is not travel authorization.

  • Reentry permit

You must be a permanent or conditional permanent resident and physically in the United States when filing. Plan for required biometrics. A permit does not guarantee admission, prevent every finding of residence abandonment, or preserve continuous residence for naturalization.

  • Refugee travel document

Establish qualifying refugee or asylee status, or qualifying permanent residence based on that status. Generally apply while in the United States before departure and follow biometrics requirements. Travel to the country of claimed persecution can affect your protection or status.

  • Valid documents and return eligibility

Review validity dates, permitted entries, and any restrictions. Travel documents do not guarantee admission or parole, and do not replace all passport or destination-visa requirements. CBP makes the decision at the port of entry.
