Forms Included in this Application

I-485 is the main application. Medical evidence, job-offer confirmation, and other supporting forms depend on your category and circumstances. Each eligible family member files separately.

Adjustment application and supporting documents

  • Required

    I-485

Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. Each eligible accompanying family member needs a separate application.

  • When required

    I-485 Supplement J

For principal applicants in categories requiring a job offer, confirm the offer with the employer when required. It is generally not needed at initial concurrent I-140/I-485 filing. EB-1A, NIW, and derivative applicants do not need Supplement J. USCIS may request it later in applicable cases.

  • Limited cases

    I-864

An Affidavit of Support is generally not required for employment-based cases. It may be required when a qualifying relative filed the petition or owns a significant interest in the petitioning business. Check the I-485 and I-864 instructions.

  • If eligible under 245(i)

    I-485 Supplement A

Only for applicants eligible to adjust under INA section 245(i), with the required evidence and any applicable additional sum. This is not a routine employment-based supplement.

    Review USCIS Supplement A instructions

Your underlying immigrant petition is a separate filing. If eligible, you may file I-485 together with I-140 or while it is pending; otherwise use the applicable approval notice. See the employment-based application packages for petition preparation. I-907 premium processing for I-140 does not expedite I-485.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Basic Eligibility Requirements

Adjustment of status has its own requirements, even when the immigrant petition is approved. Review eligibility for each applicant before filing.

Get Started
  • An eligible immigrant basis

Have a qualifying employment-based petition or be eligible to file concurrently, or qualify as a derivative spouse or child. Meet the requirements of the underlying category, including a qualifying job offer where required.

  • Visa availability

Check your priority date, preference category, country of chargeability, and the chart USCIS designates for the filing month. Final approval requires a visa number available under the Final Action Dates chart. Retrogression can delay approval after filing.

  • Presence, admission, and status history

Generally, you must be in the United States after inspection and admission or parole and avoid applicable adjustment bars. Employment-based cases have additional status and employment rules. Exceptions such as INA 245(k) or 245(i) apply only when their specific requirements are met.

  • Admissibility and individual eligibility

Meet the applicable admissibility requirements, including medical and vaccination requirements, and qualify for any necessary waiver. Each derivative applicant must independently qualify to adjust; an eligible principal applicant does not automatically make every family member eligible.

TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Getting Started

Confirm your filing window, gather your records, and arrange the medical exam before assembling the application. Coordinate job-offer evidence with the employer where applicable.

Prepare Form I-485
  1. 1

Check eligibility and the filing chart

Confirm the petition basis, priority date, USCIS monthly filing chart, and status history for you and each family member.

  2. 2

    Prepare separate application packets

Complete I-485, obtain the required medical evidence, and gather identity, admission, petition, and relationship records. Add only the optional and conditional forms that apply, with the correct fees and signatures.

  3. 3

    Plan for the pending application

Track receipts, attend required appointments, and respond to USCIS requests. Filing I-485 does not itself authorize work. Travel without appropriate authorization can abandon the application unless an exception applies; review work, travel, and job-change rules before acting.
