BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Basic Eligibility Requirements

These are common naturalization requirements. Special categories, including military service, may follow different rules.

Get Started
  • Age and permanent residence

Generally be at least 18 and meet the five-year permanent-residence rule, or the three-year rule if you meet all requirements as the spouse of a U.S. citizen.

  • Residence and physical presence

Meet the continuous-residence, physical-presence, and local residence requirements for your category. Travel outside the United States can affect eligibility.

  • Good moral character

Meet the good-moral-character requirement and provide accurate information about your history and any required supporting records.

  • English, civics, and the oath

Meet the applicable English and civics requirements unless an exception applies, and be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance, subject to applicable modifications or waivers.

Early filing may be available up to 90 days before meeting the three- or five-year continuous-residence period; other requirements still apply at filing. Use the USCIS early filing calculator rather than counting three calendar months.
